Francisco Pizaro
Francisco Pizaro, a Spanish Conquistador, conqueror of the Incan Empire and Founder of Lima, the modern day capital of Peru. Pizaro was born in Trujillo, Spain under the name Francisco Pizaro Gonzalez in the year 1471. On February 13, 1502 he sailed from Spain on a fleet of thirty ships to the new world. The thirty ships carried 2,500 colonists. (Wikipedia) In 1513 he and Balboa set off to cross the Isthmus of Panama and became the first Europeans to view the Pacific coast of the New World. On September 13, 1524 the first of the three expeditions left from Panama for the conquest of Peru with about 80 men and 40 horses. This conquest however was unsuccessful due to the lack of food, the bad weather, and skirmishes with hostile natives. 2 years later they set off for their second expedition where they sailed south crossed the equator and captured natives. There they found gold and silver, but when they tried to enter the land they faced armies of greater power and decided not to enter. For the third and final conquest they set off in 1532 and invaded Cuzco with indigenous troops and with it sealed the conquest of Peru. Pizaro died on June 26, 1941. He was assassinated by heavily armed supporters of Diego Almagro II.
